A Medical Miracle: Baby Born to Mother After Cervical Cancer

A Medical Miracle: Baby Born to Mother After Cervical Cancer

At the age of 29 Chofit Matsbeker was diagnosed with cervical cancer following a routine pap smear. Women treated for cervical cancer are generally unable to become pregnant following surgery.

But thanks to innovative surgery developed by Dr. Uzi Beller of Shaarei Tsedek Medical Center, Chofit conceived and gave birth to a baby of her own this month. She and her husband named their firstborn daughter Ada.

Chofit shared with YNet after the birth, “There is a lot of awareness about breast cancer but there is not enough awareness about cervical cancer. Every woman should be doing regular pap smears. If I wouldn’t have done this test, the cancer could have spread to my uterus and then I would have lost my chance to give birth. It’s important to remember that even if a person becomes sick, it’s not the end of the world. You need to choose the right doctor. Look at me, I got married and had a baby afterwards.”

A huge mazal tov to Chofit and her family!

  1. Does anyone have information about getting a smear test in Israel? Are they available on the kupot?

  2. Just wondering, I read, “Almost all cervical cancers are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), a common virus that can be passed from one person to another during sex.” If both the husband and wife have had no other sexual partners except for each other, the risk factor for cervical cancer is negligible. Or so I was led to believe.
