Motherhood: The Musical

Motherhood: The Musical

“History doesn’t come with a musical score to tell you when the dramatic moments are arriving—you’ve got to figure that out yourself.”

These words were spoken by America’s first Torah-observant Attorney General, Michael Mukasey.

But they apply not only to famous people, like Mr. Mukasey, whose names will appear one day in history books….

They apply just as much, if not more, to regular JewishMOMs like me and you.

This morning you made lunches, put in a load of laundry, restocked the milk and the cornflakes at the supermarket so your family will have something to eat tomorrow morning -—-hear the heroic rise of an entire violin section cheering you on.

As he sleeps, you look into the face of the teenage son you love but no longer like. Hear a mournful bassoon in a duet with a flute’s whisper of hope, and know the loving connection which has left will return one day IY”H .

You and your husband sit at your Shabbat table. The 3-year-old’s soup spills, the 13-year-old fights with the 15-year-old, and your husband begins snoring in the middle of the 8-year-old’s davar Torah. You feel let down. Upset. Until you look around the table at your family and hear an entire orchestra filling the concert hall with the glorious crescendo of a hard-earned dream come true.

“History doesn’t come with a musical score to tell you when the dramatic moments are arriving—you’ve got to figure that out yourself.”

  2. Beautiful!I am sure your family was glad to have you back home. May your father have a speedy recovery. Thanks for the update. Let’s hear good news soon.

  3. Love this!!! My musical includes the daily afternoon cacophony chorus which reaches intense crescendos highlighted by the sporadic blaring of a French horn (that would be me)….
If anyone wants to produce this musical, I’ll happily compose a number (serious offer)!

    • thanks for a hearty laugh! I could actually hear what you’re describing (at my home too…)

  5. I think this sums up our lives so well!
