One Daughter’s Dream to Return Gift of Life She Received from Ill Mother

Tsofia’s teacher, Ganenet Chaya, has a mother who is very ill with kidney disease.

Over the last week, Ganenet Chaya missed several days of teaching while caring for her mother in the hospital. So I was a bit surprised to see her at gan today at pick-up time— distributing popsicles with her regular bursting-with-positive-energy smile.

“Ganenet Chaya, how is your mother doing?”

“Not so well…I am flying with her today to Belgium where she will have a liver transplant,” she explained.

“Oh, a liver became available for her and they called you?”

“No, we children are donating a liver to her.”

My jaw fell.

“What? You mean you’re donating a kidney, right? You cannot take a liver from a living donor.”

“Actually, living people can donate part of their livers, and within a few weeks the donor’s and recipient’s livers grow back to full size. So I or my brother are going to give my mother part of our livers, depending on who is more compatible.”

Tears sprung to my eyes.

How phenomenal, to see Ganenet Chaya’s dedication to her mother.

And how moving, to see one daughter’s determination to return the gift of life her own mother gave her when she gave birth to her.

PLEASE PRAY FOR CHAYA’S MOTHER SARA RIVKA CHANA BAT BRACHA REISHA AS WELL AS MY FATHER, MATITYAHU TUVIA BEN ESTHER TSIPORA, WHO WILL BE UNDERGOING MAJOR HEART SURGERY THIS WEDNESDAY.

  1. No need to publish this…just a minor grammar nitpick…

Title should read Repay Gift instead of Return gift…

    Refu’a Shlema to all!
