Small Gifts: A Once Secular Singer’s Tribute to Shabbat Kodesh (4-Minute Music Video)

I first heard this song when my daughter chose it as her alarm-clock ring tone, and it would wake me up every morning 6:30 AM. What a wonderful song to wake up to–a reminder of the “small gift” Hashem sends us every Friday night…Since then, it seems like all of Israel is singing Rami Kleinshtein’s song– a once famously secular Jew’s heartfelt tribute to Shabbat Kodesh.

Yediot Achronot recently interviewed Kleinshtein about his growing interest in religion over the last few years and his controversial decision to no longer perform on Shabbat. Kleinstein explained, “At a certain age you understand that you are the responsible grown-up in your family, and the place of tradition in your life grows stronger since that is what you will pass on to future generations.”

Kleinshtein continued, “It would be best to write that I am sort of becoming religious… I am not willing to participate in wars among the Children of Israel: religious vs. secular, Ashkenazi vs. Sephardi. Why fight? It’s better to sing instead.”

My favorite thing about this video? His SMILE! I love seeing how much he LOVES shabbat! May Hashem bless me that I smile like that after I light Shabbat candles too:)

Small Gifts–words by Noam Horev, composed by Rami Kleinshtein

It’s still Friday, I breathe in the air
The light and the shade are playing tag again.
The table is set, childhood photos on the wall
Convoys of white return from synagogue.
And that scent which scratches my heart
Sneaks in and sneaks in and opens doors
To small joys, to that old song
Which we have been passing down for generations.

Small Gifts
Somebody sent me small gifts
Shards of kavana, circles of faith
Small gifts
Somebody sent me small gifts
Like the power to accept what I don’t have and what I do
What else could I ask for?

It’s still Friday, porch and newspaper.
The sun and the worries are slowly getting erased.
Simple tunes crawl in through the window
And no storm will conceal the quiet

Small Gifts
Somebody sent me small gifts
Shards of kavana, circles of faith
Small gifts
Somebody sent me small gifts
Like the power to accept what I don’t have and what I do
What else could I ask for?

Because You chose us
And You made us holy
Blessed are You, Hashem
Who sanctifies the Shabbat

And that scent which scratches my heart
Sneaks in and sneaks in and opens doors
To small joys, to that old song
Which we have been passing down for generations.

Small Gifts
Somebody sent me small gifts
Shards of kavana, circles of faith
Small gifts
Somebody sent me small gifts
Like the power to accept what I don’t have and what I do
What else could I ask for?

Absolutely beautiful. I so appreciate your sharing this uplifting song for Shabbat. I also found the following cover of this song put out by a couple of extremely talented young boys. I could listen all day.
