My Visit with the Black Hebrews (13-Minute Mommy Peptalk)

What I learned from the polygamous Black Hebrew families I met 11 years ago in Dimona.

  1. The idea of cooking ahead each week for several nights, is a great one! I do the same, although we eat the same food Mon thru Thurs. It really simplifies the cooking duties.

  2. I’m glad I’m not the only one who doesn’t do nightly baths! My kids get washed when they are dirty and no sooner!
Thank you again for a peptalk that helps to boost me and also give practical real life strategies.

  3. On amazon you can buy manual bidet (joy bidet) for like $25. You can use it on shabbos also. Kids can wash up their instead of showers every night

  4. Thanks for this post. Its very interesting. I’ve always thought that our idea of each individual family doing all the work doesn’t seem so productive. Do you think some of these issues were also dealt with in more of a community way in the kibbutzim?

  5. I can’t tell you what validation it is to know you give your kids one bath a week, Erev Shabbos. 🙂

  6. I think my mother-in-law would have a meltdown if she knew I was bathing her grandchildren once a week.
Besides for that I really needed to hear that talk because I beat myself up about not having highly nutritious meals everyday of the week.
Also it made me realise that I shouldn’t stop having more kids because I’m not keeping up to my high standards with the ones I already have, I just need to accept that for a couple of years (pregnancy and first year) my family will have to do with corner cutting.
Is that what you meant too?

    • sounds good to me. One small thing–you can make highly nutritious food in large quantities. So it’s less work for you and still healthy for your kids:)

  7. I always joke with my husband about taking on another wife!! I too always thought that would be a great idea, I’d raise the kids and someone else could do the cooking, lunch making, carpools!!

Also, I met one of those black Hebrews in Seattle! I was in the park and saw a family that was wearing tzitzis and they said shalom to me. I spoke to them a bit and later came home and googled them… it was enlightening.

  8. in seattle? interesting

  9. Yes, I also rarely bathe my little ones 🙂 if they smell, I bathe them. I’ve been feeling guilty about this, thank you for the reminder of keeping priorities!

  10. I felt very validated and peaceful listening to this. I sometimes feel like a bad mother because I don’t bathe my children every night.

    Thank you.
