Mazal Tov, it’s Tisha b’Av

Mazal Tov, it’s Tisha b’Av

Yesterday I told my 7-year-old Tsofia that, no, for a few more days she and her siblings still can’t fill up the swimming pool in the backyard and take a dip.

“Oh right,” she said, realizing her mistake, “now it’s the 9 months!”

And I was reminded of something I read in Rabbanit Yemima’s book on the 3 weeks, “Kmayim Leebech.”

Rabbanit Yemima wrote:

“The tradition is to darken the synagogue on Tisha B’Av night, before the reading of the Book of Lamentations…

“And when everything is so dark, maybe the lights suddenly will turn on, and we will realize we are in a surprise party

“because this is the 9th of Av, and when we see the number 9 we know that the redemption is on the way

“Just as a baby is born after 9 months and

“The Moshiach, we are taught, is born on Tisha B’av.”

So I’m blessing you this Tisha b’Av with a meaningful fast as well as a heartfelt mazal tov:)

  1. Jenny,

Besides all the 3 weeks Halachah, I wanted to do something that would hasten the redemption and conteract the mourning. Chesed by way of Tzedaka was my answer.

For the 3 weeks, whenever a daily request came for a donation, each day I sent something. My hope is that this very small act in the vast universe of Jewish conciousness may have a minute effect. Although I give tzedaka all year, it seems like a special act to me. I hope to repeat the giving next year and pray that in the near future, there will be no Tisha B’Av.

Thank you for your inspiring Blog,

    Chaya Rivka
