What the Rebbe Did After His Son Choked on a Marble

You can read this post or watch me reading it in the video below…

Many years ago, the young son of the great Slonimer Rebbe, the Netivot Shalom, swallowed a marble.

The Rebbe, fearing for the boy’s life, rushed with his son in his arms to the hospital. The doctor on call saw that the boy was turning blue and that they had no time to waste.

The doctor instructed the Rebbe to firmly hold his son’s chin up high as the doctor used his surgical knife to perform an emergency tracheotomy.

The Rebbe’s daughter, Rebbetzin Nechama Luria, explained many years later that the Rebbe’s terrifying experience revealed to him the most intense love a parent can possibly feel for a child…

The Netivot Shalom taught that when a child is deathly ill, and the father is a doctor and must perform surgery on him, the father feels torn up inside as he cuts into his child’s flesh in order to save his life.

Such a moment is the ultimate mixture gevura and chesed, of strictness and lovingkindness.

And that is the intense love that G-d feels for us at those moments in life when the darkness is thick all around us and we feel completely alone in the universe.

And that is also, the Netivot Shalom taught, the love that G-d felt for us that first Tisha b’Av, when He destroyed the Temple, while saving the Jewish people, giving us life.

That is the incomparable love, of father to beloved son, of Tisha b’Av.
