53 and Single, No Longer

53 and Single, No Longer

Two weeks ago, I was in Denmark on vacation when my phone pinged with a text message from Jerusalem. It was from my friend and neighbor, Talia: “I am excited to share that the prayers have been answered, and the man whom my heart has selected has found me!”

Right then and there, in distant Denmark, I got goosebumps all over.

Talia and I have attended a class together for the last year and a half. Week by week, Talia has impressed me as an incredibly lovely person, kindhearted, beautiful, spiritual, devoted to friends and family. Every time I see her, and remember how much she suffers as an older single, I feel disbelief that some smart man hasn’t yet chosen her to be his wife.

And now, b”H, one smart man, the right man, has.

Here is Talia’s incredible story (translated from the original Hebrew):

Last month, I celebrated my 53rd birthday.

Though it’s hard to say I celebrated it, because reaching this age, still single, is far from easy.

Over the past 33 years of dating, I’ve met with innumerable men. More than a few times over the years, I believed I’d found Mr. Right, but in the end things didn’t work out and I returned, time and time again, to my life of loneliness. This was especially difficult on Shabbat, on holidays, and during weddings and other joyous occasions.

About two months ago, a matchmaker told me about a man who sounded good on paper. I arrived at the date, yet again hopeful that this time it would be the right person, and I could finally set up my home with him.

But I quickly realized that this date was not my salvation. He was very critical and throughout the date he insulted me and was hurtful regarding issues about which I’m particularly sensitive.

At one point during the meeting, my date turned to me and said: “I remember your picture from such-and-such a dating site.”

I was very embarrassed because I remembered that a friend had registered me on this certain this site two years before, but I did not know that my picture and my name were still circulating around the site.

At the end of that date, this fellow said to me: “You’re a very disabled person, it’s really too bad you continue dating!”

I left that date crying my eyes out. I turned to the Master of the Universe and said to Him, “I cannot take anymore. If you want me to get married, please send me my husband!”

The next day, I was in touch with the friend who had registered me for that dating site, and asked her to delete my personal details from the site.

But, for some reason, that friend took a while, and it took her a week and 2 days before she logged in.

But the day she logged in to erase my name, she saw I had been contacted by someone who had seen my profile that very day.

My friend looked over this man’s details, and it seemed to her that he could be a match for me. She requested from me to make one more small effort and agree to meet with one more person.

That same day this man called me, and that evening we met at the same cafe where I had met with the insulting and offensive date just a few days before.

It did not take long for me to realize that this person was very different from the men I had met up until then. I found him respectful and pleasant, and just a half an hour into our first date, he said, “You will be my wife this year, in 5778!”

I thought he was delirious. 5778 would be over in less than 3 months!

But it turned out he was right and I was wrong. Mr. Right, to be exact.

Now we are preparing for our wedding that will take place a few days before Rosh Hashana.

Praise G-d for his goodness, and for his neverending lovingkindness.

      B’H,
I cannot believe how similar my story is to yours. For me, my first husband died of lung cancer in 2007. I waited 1 1/2 years before considering dating. My friend encouraged me to sign up for online dating and meeting after meeting men who were offensive and downright mean, I said to my friend that I’m canceling my dating site account. She begged me to wait another month and then she said, if nothing comes along, she and I will cancel my account together. Well, the 3rd week a very nice tall gentleman came along and we started a conversation online. We met up at a cafe and we’ve been together ever since. We started dating in 2009 and were married in 2011. We just celebrated our 7th wedding anniversary.

Mazel Tov Talia to you both. Wishing you both a lifetime of happiness and excellent health. We both know that Hashem knows best who is the right person for both of us.
