Generations by Shalsheles (A Moving 6-Minute Bonei Olam Video)

I’ve noticed time and time again that survivors and their children CARE more about other Jews. They are the most dedicated teachers, the most determined tikkun olam-niks. While another person might tend to think, “Everyone else is doing fine, what does it really matter if one person falls between the cracks?” the survivors and their families will not give up until that struggling Jew is back on his feet.

Watching this inspiring video I was thinking that survivors’ exceptional caring comes from the suffering they or their parents witnessed, and their resulting intense appreciation for every Jew born after the Shoah…No Jew is disposable, G-d forbid. Each one of us is SO precious. Special thanks to JewishMOM Miriam Friedman for sending this my way…

  1. This is very very true. I have an entire website and research project devoted to the wisdom and work of survivors. Trauma pushes people to the extremes – both the very, very good and the very, very wounded. Even more, the two can co-exist at the same time.

I wrote an article about this a couple years ago: ifshecryout.com/the-boys-of-buchenwal-and-the-cycle-of-violence/ .

I know the you are going through very difficult things in your neighborhood. This other side of trauma is very important to remember. No one should have to live through what these children or their parents and friends are suffering, but HaShem is giving each one of these children an extra measure of goodness for them to bring into the world so that they can take their experiences and turn them into a chance to repair the world.

  2. please anyone can help me find the lyrics of this song, pleasee!!!

    • Its Friday night piece descends
      Shalom Aleichem their voices blend
As young and old singing in harmony

To watch their faces in the candles glow
The child his sweet voice does flow
Mingling with his Zaidy’s in melody

And Zaidy smiles filled with pride
      His great-grandson at his side
One can see the fire within his eyes
It’s the spark of all of those who have survived to build their lives
With memories of six million left behind

      Chorus:
Its generations and generations links in a lasting chain
Klal Yisroel growing stronger rebuilding again and again and again
Footsteps of our great past our guide through the sorrows and pain
G-D will not forsake us our hopes and our dreams will always remain

      Suddenly amidst the joy
He gazes at the little boy
There’s a flash of sadness pained so long

He tells them of a world come high
As he heaves a heavy sigh
Remembering a time that is no more

      Child runs for an embrace
The tears roll down from his little face
Oh zaidy won’t you please explain to me
Why do people kill and hate
      How can they annihilate
His young eyes look up so earnestly

Its generations and generations links in a lasting chain
Klal Yisroel growing stronger rebuilding again and again and again
My child there is a G-D above who watches over us with love
At times it may seem so hard to understand
When darkness falls and we feel lost
We know where we must place our trust
Remember that there is a master plan

Its generations and generations links in a lasting chain
Klal Yisroel growing stronger our hopes and our dreams will always remain
