The Song I Will be Singing this Israeli Memorial Day
Memorial Day is still several hours away, but I already feel the heaviness in the air, the grief that falls over the country like a cloud as we remember the 23,447 soldiers who gave their lives so I and my family and every Israeli can live securely in our homeland. This heartbreaking yet inspirational song, “A Single Human Tissue,” was performed by singers Yonatan Razel and Avraham Tal last Memorial Day, and captures how much we mourn with the bereaved families for their, our, fallen sons and daughters.
Lyrics in English and Hebrew below
A Single Human Tissue by Moti Hammer
When I die, something from me
will die within you
When you die, something from you in me,
Will die with you.
Because all of us
We are a single living human tissue
And if one of us leaves us
Something dies within us–
and something remains with him.
If we would know, how to calm
the hatred, if we would only know.
If we would know, if we would know how to quiet our fury
Despite our insults, to say “forgive me”
If we would know how to start over
Because all of us
We are a single living human tissue
And if one of us leaves us
Something dies within us–
and something remains with him.
