My Advice for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle
Like many millions of people, I watched the video of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle discussing his marriage proposal (below). What an incredibly sweet couple! So romantic and moving to see a couple so in love!
If I could give Prince Harry and Meghan some advice based on my 21 years of marriage, this is what I would tell them:
51 years ago my late grandfather blessed his newly-married son and daughter-in-law (AKA my Mom and Dad): “May you always feel as much love for each other as you do today!”
Problem was, my parents had actually had a big fight that day, and were quite furious with one another. “May you always feel as much love for each other as you do today”? What kind of blessing is that?!
But, then again, in a way, maybe it actually was a blessing?
When I think of my own 21 years of marriage, not everything has been as rosy and wonderful and dreamy as a royal wedding. But as much as the good, fun, happy times have brought Josh and I together, what’s brought us even closer have been the hard times. Knowing that the most important moments of my life, the highs and the lows, Josh and I went through them together. Josh and I are not blood relatives, of course, but the blood, sweat and tears we’ve been through together make him feel like one–actually closer.
That was not something I felt when I wore that white dress laced with fairy dust on my wedding day.
For every couple, dear Prince Harry and Meghan, that initial fairy-dust love can be replaced by something deeper, something eternal. The true love born of riding the roller coaster–the ups as well as life’s stomach-churning downs–together.
