Mourning Jewish Mom, Jacki Sundheim: July 4th Shooting Victim

This past Shabbat we bonded over kugel and cholent with a wonderful group from a Chicago synagogue, not far Highland Park and from the congregation where Jacki Sundheim A”H spent decades as a devoted employee, volunteer, and member. Maybe that experience combined with reading about Jacki and what a committed Jew and a giving, loving woman she was, is making me feel especially sad and moved in the wake of her senseless, tragic murder.

Jacki’s synagogue released the following statement following yesterday’s shocking events: “Jacki’s work, kindness, and warmth touched us all, from her early days teaching at the Gates of Learning Preschool to guiding innumerable among us through life’s moments of joy and sorrow as our Events and B’nei Mitzvah Coordinator– all of this with tireless dedication.”
Jacki is survived by her husband Bruce and daughter Leah.

Jacki’s nephew, Luke Sundheim, posted the following moving tribute to his beloved aunt yesterday on his Facebook page:
“If you knew Jacki you’d know that she was one of the kindest people you’d ever meet and she went out of her way to help anyone she could. Jacki had endless love for my Uncle Bruce and their daughter Leah. The world lost a truly special person and I’m both furious and incredibly sad that I won’t be able to spend any more time with her. ”

May her family find comfort and may her memory be a blessing to all those who knew her and to all those who are finding out about this devoted wife, mother, and member of the Jewish people after her light has already been extinguished–too soon.
