Feeling Elul at 7 Mile Market

Feeling Elul at 7 Mile Market

I’ve been transitioning into Elul mode for a while now. I’ve been listening to classes on Elul and doing writing exercises on Elul and engaging in deep thinking about this past year and this coming year for Elul.

But somehow Elul didn’t really sink in until I visited Baltimore’s kosher 7 Mile Market today, and found myself confronted by an entire aisle of Rosh Hashanah products–multicolored “Shana Tova” shofars, apple and honey sets, Rosh HaShana cookie cutters (I bought some, how I could I resist?)
I was reminded of the tsadikim who would tremble when Elul arrived. Even the fish in the sea, they say, trembled with awe!
But for this Jewish Mom it didn’t really sink in: “Get serious, Rosh HaShana is right around the corner” until I was confronted by that Rosh Hashana aisle and felt my heart quiver within me. The High Holy Days, I understood, are fast upon us, for real.
