I’m Going to Stand Here Like a Unicorn

I’m Going to Stand Here Like a Unicorn

Israelis relate to the Eurovision song contest like Americans relate to the Grammys. With that said, the featured songs usually range from somewhat vapid to incredibly vapid.

So this year’s Israeli entry, sung by Noa Kirel, was a pleasant surprise. Her song “Unicorn” is about the Jewish people, Israel, antisemitism and anti-Israel bias. And how, like a unicorn, the Jewish people stands alone in the world: ancient, mystical, noble, unique.
I thought of this song this Shabbat as I walked around my childhood neighborhood dressed up for Shabbat. As I passed all the regular people walking their dogs, I felt out of place.
But under my breath, I sang to myself:
“I’m going to stand here like a unicorn
“Out here on my own
“I got the power of a unicorn…
I won’t look back, I won’t look down
I’m going up, you better turn around
The power of a unicorn, the power of a unicorn.”
After Shabbat I found out that this song won 3rd place, and Noa Kirel was ranked #1 as crowd favorite. As a Jew and an Israeli, that made me feel seen. And understood. And proud.
