Go, Eden, Go!
The Eurovision song contest was viewed last year by 162 million people, making it one of the most-watched non-sporting events in the world.
This year’s Israeli representative, 20-year-old Eden Golan, hasn’t had an easy time of it. Her song about October 7th was originally called October Rain, but the Eurovision rejected that title because it was “too political.” So while the other lyrics remained the same, the song’s title and chorus were switched to “Hurricane.”
Then, at this week’s dress rehearsal with a live audience, Eden was booed by anti-Israel audience members. This is after spending two challenging weeks in Malmo, Sweden, where the Eurovision is being held this year, which is 20% Muslim, one of Western Europe’s most heavily-Muslim cities.
Imagine being 20 years old, and standing up and representing Israel and the Jewish people in the face of the current surge of worldwide hatred and antisemitism. Eden’s sense of shlichut, her fortitude, and bravery is all the more remarkable because Israeli-born Eden only returned to Israel 2 years ago after spending 12 years in Moscow with her Soviet-born Israeli parents.
Eden, we are so proud of you! Go Eden go!
