A Manicure with Mummy

A Manicure with Mummy

Today Josh and I were at a cafe when 2 older sisters with their elderly mother sat down at the table right next to ours.

The daughters treated their mother to a tower of finger sandwiches and petit-fours in honor of her birthday.
At one point, I overheard one of the daughters saying, “But Mummy, we can’t go this week because Tuesday is Tisha b’av and Wednesday we have nails.”
If I was holier than I am, then in my minds eye this possibly perilous Tisha b’Av would be mixed with comforting visions of Moshiach, of world Jewry streaming to Israel (Delta and United will even resume direct flights:), of a broken world made perfect, “Hashem’s redemption in the blink of an eye.”
But I’m not holier than I am. So more than visions of the final redemption, I am feeling comforted as I prepare for this possibly perilous Tisha b’Av by the image of that daughter taking her mummy out for a giggle-filled afternoon at the manicurist. The daughter will choose bright red. Mummy will choose a classy pale pink.
A vibrant, deeply comforting vision of a loving family continuing to live a good, long, peaceful life in our embattled homeland.
