Mom who Lost Legs in Tornado Starts “Great New Chapter”
It is quite extraordinary listening to this interview with hero mom Stephanie Decker who lost both of her legs shielding her young children when a tornado hit their home on March 2nd. If I’d had to guess, I would have thought that when describing these last three months, Decker would have used words like “depressing” “traumatic” ” difficult.”
But even though I’m sure these months have also included a considerable amount of grieving behind closed doors for the life she’s lost, it is extraordinary to see how in this interview Decker chooses to focus on the loss of her legs as the opening of a new and exciting chapter of her life. She insists, “I have another shot at life, and I don’t want to blow that! I’m going to make the best of it, whether I have legs or not, that’s not important…It’s been a long journey, but it’s been a good one along the way. You’re going to have your ups and downs, but this is going to be a great new chapter for us.”
This hero mom reminds me how the word in Hebrew for crisis is “Mashber,” which also means birth. Please Hashem, in facing the challenges that are an inevitable part of life, may I also be able to transform them into positive opportunities for growth and self-change like this determined and courageous hero mom. Special thanks to my Nachlaot buddy Gittl Nadel for sending this my way…
