Lulav Love

Lulav Love

My son brought home a flyer for his school’s annual lulav sale today.

And a wave of deja vu washed over me…

I remembered myself at 11 years old, like my son, presenting my parents with a flyer for my school’s annual pre-Christmas poinsettia sale.

This unexpected memory sharpened the sweetness…

Of sitting here, in Jerusalem. My counter still sticky with Rosh Hashana honey, Yom Kippur awe already in the air, soon to be replaced the day after the fast with the fragrance of Succot palm fronds. The corners of my mouth turning up with sweet anticipation.

To be living a Jewish life, raising Jewish children, deep within Tishrei, poinsettias tied up with a red felt bow a universe away.
