Happily Ever After?

Happily Ever After?

I apologize for posting this ironic New-Yorker cartoon on the most romantic day of the Jewish year, Tu b’Av, but it reminded me of something important thing I heard a few years ago which completely switched how I think about marrying off children.

My friend asked an older mom how you know a child is ready to get married. The older mom said, “Listen, if you wait until your child has no more issues, you will wait forever. You have issues, I have issues, all our kids have issues. Human being have issues! The question is whether your child is emotionally healthy and mature enough to work on their personal issues and relationship issues with their new spouse. That’s when I know my children are ready to get married.”
Marriage is about working on our issues. Hopefully happily. But sometimes not. Together. For ever after. Happy Tu b’av!
