A Surprising Question from our Chinese Guest

A Surprising Question from our Chinese Guest

Last night we hosted a wonderful group of 28 Chinese tourists. We are learning that Chinese people ask very different questions than our guests from Western countries.

Last night, for example, one guest stood up and asked, “In this country, is your family considered rich, poor, or middle class?”
As though this is a question we get asked all the time, without missing a beat, Josh answered, “You could say we are middle class. We don’t have a lot of money, but we do have enough.”
But another guest called out, “No, Rabbi Josh, you are not middle class, you are extremely wealthy. Because you are blessed with a lot of the most valuable thing in the world: children.”
