Liora Argamani A”H: A Double Love Story

There’s a lot of mystery around Liora Argamani A”H, the Chinese-Jewish mother of released hostage Noa who passed away today at the age of 61. I was curious to learn more about her, and my poking around revealed a remarkable woman who travelled across the world, leaving behind everything and everyone she knew (even giving up her Chinese citizenship) in order to join the Jewish people in their homeland and marry her beloved husband, Yaakov. Liora was born Tsung Hong Li in the now infamous city of Wuhan, China. She arrived in Israel in...

I’m in the Army Now…Too! by Rinatya Rosenberg

[A few days ago my daughter told me that her dear friend Rinatya, a 26-year-old social worker with a soldier-husband in the North, was in basic training! This was a story I had to hear…and share:] Daniel and I got married about a year and a half ago. We had a calm first year, and spent a month-long honeymoon in India. We returned just a week before the war. We spent that Simchat Torah with Daniel’s family in Jerusalem, and when we heard the sirens Daniel immediately realized something very, very extreme was happening. A few hours...

Everything I Need Right Now

Today I got some disappointing news about something I was hoping would work out but didn’t. And I was feeling upset, and the upset feeling wasn’t lifting for a long time. So I thought of things I could do to cheer myself up. I could buy myself a new skirt. No, I already bought something new today, and it didn’t even make a dent. I could name my emotions. I’m frustrated. And disappointed. And angry. Nope, didn’t help. And then, out of the blue, I thought of a song I heard Tziona Achishena sing at a women’s...

Dvir’s Final Chesed

This Shabbat, the parents and siblings of 21-year-old Dvir Lisha HY”D, were hosted by Jerusalem’s Heroism Tent. His mother, who I realized had been my daughter’s high-school guidance counselor, told us about her special son: Dvir was musically gifted, we loved singing together in harmony on Shabbat. He was also a gifted artist, and for his bar mitzvah we printed a booklet of beautiful pictures he had drawn for all of the parshiyot. School wasn’t easy for Dvir. After 9th grade he dropped out of yeshiva, but he was...

No News is Good News

Here’s my 3 stages of following-the-news since October 7th. Stage One: For th8e first few weeks of the war I checked the news several times a day. The war dominated my life and my thoughts, and my mood went up and down (usually down, way down) in accordance with the news cycle. Stage Two: I discovered “Israel News Highlights” an excellent, just-the-facts news summary sent out via Whatsapp 3 times a day ( https://link.mmb.org.il/INH_NEWS). For the first few weeks, I would anxiously FOMO-ize, counting down the minutes til 9:30...
