The 1st Thing I Do Every Year Right After Purim
This afternoon, even though my house and I are still recovering from Purim, and it meant pushing myself beyond my wiped-outness and leaving behind the 2 blessed sem girls hard at work on my pot-stacked kitchen and wine-stained living room floor…I went out to do what I do every year.
Every year, for around a decade already, right after Purim and before I start any of my Pesach shopping and cleaning, I go downtown to buy myself a new dress and a hat for Seder night.
I do this because I know what happens between Purim and Pesach. Passover is 4 weeks away, then 3 weeks…and then Seder is tomorrow and I forgot to buy matzah and nobody can find the jumbo Pesach soup pot in the attic and the corner store is out of eggs so I’m waiting in the supermarket line as long as the bitter exile.
I would love to go shopping for an new outfit for myself, of course, but what’s more important, eggs or a new hat!
There is a mitzvah for every Jew to be happy on the holidays. And that includes me! And our Sages teach that nothing makes us women happier than getting new clothing or jewelry.
Buying myself this dress represents making my happiness and sanity a priority while getting ready for Passover. This year I have a new dress and hat AND I am going to get lots of help AND I am going to stop cleaning whenever I’m no longer enjoying myself AND I am not going overboard.
So happy cleaning, JewishMOM! (But first of all, happy shopping!)
Thank you for the reminder!!
