Chizuk for Today from the Father of Capt. Yoni Natanel z”l

In response to the tragic events of this past Shabbat, we can get chizuk from the words of Rabbi Amos Natanel, father of Capt. Yonatan z”l, to the crew of the tank that mistakenly killed his son during Operation Cast Lead in 2009: “Rest assured, you did not hurt Yoni, Yoni died al Kiddush Hashem (sanctifying God’s name) at exactly the time when Heaven intended it for him. You were only the pure angels to carry this out. It is good, we believe, that your pure hands injured him and not the hands of an impure enemy.” While...

The Burden on our Hearts Right Now

I’m sure every Jewish heart has a burden on its heart after hearing the news from Shabbat. When I heard the news right after havdalah I felt so devastated It doesn’t make any sense! We’ve all been praying so much for the hostages. And we even prayed for the hostages on Zot Chanukah, the day when a simple Jew can bring about miracles that only a tsaddik on Yom Kippur can! And then, right after Zot Chanukah, this unfathomable tragedy. I don’t know why Hashem let this happen. But I do believe this, that when Hashem places...

Chanukah’s Not Over Yet! Until sunset Friday, it’s one of the holiest days of the year. Let’s take this opportunity to pray for Am Yisrael: for our soldiers, our hostages, our Evacuees, and for Ourselves. Shabbat Shalom! ❤️ [I will be regularly updating the hostage prayer list at this link:...

The Meal We Sent to a Fallen Soldier

The Meal We Sent to a Fallen Soldier

Every week, as part of our Sandwiches for Soldiers project, we deliver smoked pastrami sandwiches to soldiers. Over 300,000 IDF soldiers are serving now on the south and northern fronts, so truth is our delivery of 100-200 sandwiches+cakes+soda+cards from our kids’ schools is barely a drop in the ocean. But we always get nice thank yous from the soldiers, and from the commanders’ wives or mothers who are the ones who request and coordinate the weekly deliveries from our Jerusalem home to deep inside Gaza. And even though it’s...

After an Eye Injury, from Darkness to Light

After an Eye Injury, from Darkness to Light

Yesterday afternoon I was putting away a vacuum bag of summer clothing when the bag’s corner scratched the inside of my eye. My husband took me to the emergency room, where the doctor gave me a tube of antibiotic eye cream coupled with a dire warning that “your eye is going to hurt a lot, a lot!” So I missed yesterday’s candle lighting, cause opening my eyes hurt too much. This was sad for me cause Chanukah is probably my favorite holiday of the year, and my favorite part of this favorite holiday is sitting by my...

Chassidim Light 138 Menorahs for 138 Hostages

Boys from the Erloy Yeshiva in Jerusalem have prepared menorahs for the 138 Israelis held in Gaza by the Hamas terrorists. Each menorah bears the name of a captive who can’t light a menorah on their own this year. The unity in Israel today, from Right to Left, from Ultra-Orthodox to Ultra-secular is...

My Geula Tambourine

Groups of Jewish women have been gathering together around the world to decorate tambourines, like this one I made at a gathering hosted by my dear friend Devora Sinton. We are doing this to prepare to dance and sing like Miriam and the Israelite women did after Bnei Yisrael were saved by the miraculous splitting of the Red Sea. One participant made an exquisite tambourine (in photo) which we delivered to Rachel Goldberg Polin, mother of 23-year-old Hersh who was seriously injured before being taken captive by Hamas. Please God, may we...

Modern Maccabees

Modern Maccabees

A powerful speech by Battalion Commander Boaz Schwartz before his soldiers entered combat in Gaza. He reminds them (and us) of the IDF soldiers’ important place in history, following in the footsteps of the Maccabees and other Jewish heroes, and a future source of inspiration for their descendants. When my daughter saw me editing this video, she said, “He’s my friend’s dad, you know! She was in my class in high school.” I’m moved that this is the kind of idealistic heroes that we and our children live...
